Let's face it people, we have all been bored sometimes, whether it's at classes, work, or at the end of a long exam. What we usually do is maybe listen to music or read a good book, but sometimes even these hobbies are getting boring already, (well, maybe not music). When I enter these kinds of situations, I do one or two of the following:
1. Thinking and testing different concepts of logos.
Designing a logo can be a very fascinating and interesting thing to do. For me, that is the best time I actually think of a concept without looking at any inspirations that just make me jealous, instead, I purely use my mind and creativity. Us the web designers always need some kind of concepts and ideas logos when designing a new website, a business card or anything that requires some kind of identity, in that situation, you bring the sketches you have drawn when you were bored. When you're done with the sketch, go home and move it to the digital world!
2. Planning a layout.
Think and test different styles of layout organizations, or in other words, sketch website wireframes. This will become very handy later on in the first steps when designing a new website. This "internet-free" situation is also very good for improving our imagination and creativity, that way you are not looking at inspirations and saying they had the exact idea you had. Try making the most unique yet stylish layouts, and when you get access to computer, design it, code it, and make it alive!
3. Writing tutorials and/or articles.
Yes, some of you might be thinking "why in the world will I write when I got free time?!”, well, if you truly inspire and care about the subject of web design, you wouldn't be saying that, it's simple as that. Nowadays, web design and development are a huge element in the world of web, and writing articles and/or tutorials based on your knowledge may donate a lot to it. In addition, studies had proven that teaching or explaining to others your understandings helps you understand a lot better and expands your own knowledge. After writing your first article or tutorials, there is no better feeling than receiving good feedback and comments, try it, it's actually fun!
4. Think of new ideas for websites.
It's difficult, but it isn’t impossible. These days, the web is full of many kinds and ideas of websites. Usually, passionate web designers and developers are dying to design or build a new website, but never actually have an idea of what. Best tips I can give you is building something for the community, something that people will actually have to come back for it and use it, something that will make them come every now and then. If you are busy or just too lazy to start a whole new project, redesign your portfolio, and if you don't have one yet, what the hell are you waiting for?!
5. Read, improve and expand your knowledge.
Do you really know everything about web design and/or development? Everything!? I doubt it. If you do, this post isn't really for you. If you feel like expanding your knowledge and open your mind to other stuff, make sure you print some articles or tutorials before getting to class or work, they will become handy when you get bored. Get in your hand material you are really interested to know, that can be anything from languages such as CSS, PHP and all the way to web-marketing, graphics or anything else that interests you. Believe me, when you go nothing better to do, learning new stuff always works!
Well, that’s for now. I presented to you five to-dos while being bored at almost any situation. In addition, these ideas can avoid designer’s block, something we all experience. These simple ideas can expand your knowledge and improve your creativity. Believe me, you can only gain from it, I’ve experienced it.
So tell me, what do YOU do when you are bored at any situation? Do you have any other tips to mention that can be useful to pass on the time? Share it with us!
